1ST Dyno Visit (5/26/01)

First dyno run for this car ever.  This was done on a mobile dyno from Werx Motorsports.   You can see in the above pic the blower was not pointed where it should be, and it was off on a few pulls.  I also only had 3 minutes of total dynotime, with someone else doing the driving.  No time to tune or log.  These pulls were done with every mod I had up to date, including 20psi and pumpgas, and the worn webcams which I only realized a few days later.  It was pretty warm and humid outside as well.  The car was converted to FWD for the dyno sessions.  Here is a pic of the dyno sheet:

The first dyno run was done with a cooled down car.  I used alcohol spray on the fmic and such to keep things cool, radiatator fans on all the time, dyno fans on as well.  I would drive up to 4th gear, and do a roll on from 3krpm.

Air fuel seems to be wacky, 13:1 at 4400rpm, dipping to 12:1, and rising to 12.8:1 at 6000rpm, then quickly dipping and rising again.  This seems like a PMS issue, meaning that I only have fuel adjustments at 4k, 6k and 7.8k rpm adjustments.   Strangely the safc blue wire mod read .98-1.00 o2 volts, while the pms read lean at .90.  For the record, I had 7ES gapped to .028, Exhaust cam gear at 4deg Retard, and untouched settings from the highway.  (Actually, this was my 2nd run. My first run was not captured and I hit 375whp.  From that run to this run, I decreased timing from 7deg to 5deg advance @ 6krpm, and from 3deg to 1deg @ 7.8krpm.  I also added more fuel and ran -20, -16, +10, +18 at the pms rpm points), afcMASC preset to 67degF airtemp, 4.0volt barometer=sea level

PMS Log of O2s vs RPMs.  Notice how similar the PMS o2s match the A/F Dyno numbers.  Makes you wonder if the PMS values are really that incorrect :)

PMS Log of Boost vs RPMS.  Notice how I get 19~20psi at 3600rpm in 4th gear (ProfecB).  The Green turbo really isnt that laggy, plus these accelerations were roll ons starting at 3000rpm.

PMS Log of Coolant Temp vs RPM.  I run a 180deg T-stat, notice how it jumps to about 196degF.  I'de like to have it stay rock solid at 180deg some day.  This might call for a larger radiator, but this might also be due to the fact of not having real world 120mph wind hitting the car.

PMS Fuel% vs RPM.  Looks like i'm not maxing out my injectors per the loggers information.  80% Cycle is about the limit for sustained injector duty (so I read)

PMS Timing vs RPM.  The Big cahuna.  Notice how at the top, the timing is fighting the pms to reach a level number.  I have this to fix still.   Basically, the ecu wants to raise the timing itelf a certain way.  I am forcing the timing to raise at certain points, and lower at other points.  This causes inconsistent timing and is something I need more time to 'perfect'.  How?  I have to edit the timing with more interpolation points.  Having only 3 rpm points is too broad of a range.

On this run, I did the following.  Reset ECU, Gapped plugs to .030, Retarded EXHCam gear to 5deg from 4deg, added +4% more fuel to entire PMS map giving -20, -12, +14, +22.  A/F ratio now started at 11.5:1 and ended at 12.5:1, which is a bit more richer than before, but "ideal" theoretically.   HP didnt change, torque didnt change, nothing really changed.  Some say I should have done one thing at a time.  I dont think any of these tricks I did would cause any change.  I really wanted to see for myself, but they were so minute.  Car was also getting warmer.  I question if my fuel pressure is too low, and didnt look at my injector duty cycle (it could have been getting pretty high).  Torque crosses HP at 5300rpm, right about where i feel the power 'taper off' on the seat of the pants.   This seems like a typical 4G63 power curve from what i've seen elsewhere, so no suprises here.  Car is feeling quite strong also.

A/F Starts at 11:1 and ends at 12:1.  Looks like the car likes to go a bit leaner as rpms increase.  I also went BACK to 4deg retard from 5deg.  No fuel change, no other change.  This proves that the car is very consistent.  I dont think there is anything else I could change to greatly add more hp.  Anything I would change wouldnt effect it much.  This is probably as much hp as I can make on 20psi.  I dont think the racegas would do anything here, since my timing was ultra-good (meaning no major knock encountered).  

I noticed that removing the timing from 6krpm and 7.8krpm seemed to let the ecu raise timing itself.  That gave me 8 more hp :)  You can see on the logs above for more info.

This chart shows the a/f ratio of 11.5:1.  It was the best pull, and had the smoothest a/f ratio curve of the others.  The jaggedy lines was due to a badly setup proefi knock control.  That has been taken cared of.
The figures there are 401whp at 6800rpm peak.

This chart shows the torque curve, at 345.7 and seems to peak at 5000rpm.  

There was almost no cooldown time between each pull, but the coolant temps were near 165-170deg all times.  The runs were done pretty consistently, and yielded 375whp on the first runs.  The main factor here was positioning the exhaust cam gear back to 0 degrees.  The car also emitted loads of black smoke from running rich.

Day started at 391whp coming from the rain.  It was a trial run, 20psi, and I had my tranny pump, rad. fan and lights on, to see how much the load would affect power.  After a few back to back runs, having these things on did not make any difference to the power output.

The runs were made with 93 octane and 20psi.   Running the FJO, I had the a/f ratio almost perfect, so it was a no brainer.  The first chart shows the HP and A/F ratio.  Notice how the a/f is pretty much dead even at 12.4~12.8. The FJO was reading mid 11s.  This could have been due to the cold shop wideband.  After a few runs both widebands began reading identical numbers, closer to 11.8~12.0 ratio.   Max hp here is 405whp, at 20psi and pumpgas.  It starts at 272whp @ 4krpm when boost kicks in, in 4th gear.  Next to it is my PROefi datalog of the FJO wideband o2 sensor.  Notice how flat the a/f line is, but the knock supression keeps me from going over 7000rpm.  I dont know why it does this.

4The next chart shows the difference between my previous 401whp and my current 405whp.  Notice how smooth this run is.  This was mainly due to tuning out alot of knock and fuel issues with my maps on the ProEfi.  Works like a charm :)

I ended up doing a 3rd gear pull in the next run.  It hit 418.5whp this time, at 370ftlbs torque.  Still at 93 octane, but 21 psi creeping to 22 at 7k (107 load on my proefi).  You can see how 3rd starts about 500rpm later (lag), yet 3rd and 4th gear pulls are almost identical.  Next to it is the PROefi datalog file of this run.  Same knock issue.

I then did another 4th gear pull, and matched my 3rd gear's 418.5 with a 417.6.  Very consistent, and very equal.  EGTS are hitting 860 top of 4th.

And finally, my final 417.6whp in 4th gear, 21-22psi run compared to a stout 12.5:1 a/f ratio, and torque of 371.  All on plain jane pumpgas :)  The torque is very wide as well which gives for increadable seat of pants feeling.  Also included is the PROefi datalog file, a/f from the FJO and knock activity.  This is how I left the dyno session.  Sadly, its not how I wanted to end up.  I think I'm running too much boost for 93 octane.

Notice how all these runs, I quickly loose hp after 6800rpm.  I seem to have a strange problem somewhere, where the proefi removes loads of timing to combat sudden knock.  I dont know if its noise, but i'm working on it.

Managed 5 runs on BMtranny.com 's new AWD dynojet dyno.  I was hoping to see at most 350whp this time, since the fwd dyno usually nets more power.  But to my suprise, I was able to pull off 416whp and 360 torque.  About the same thing as the previous graphs.  Let see how well the run went.

The first shot is the actual HP and Torque chart.  In SAE numbers.  Nothing special here, the same problem around 6900rpm where I loose all power.  Looking at the 2nd chart, you can see the how smooth and quite everything looks at 23psi and 93 octane.  Not bad for serious highway tuning.  But, as usual, around 6900rpm, sudden knock causes the system to go overly rich, killing my power totally at 7000rpm.

Those crazy peaks and valleys in the torque and horsepower come from my anti-knock system constantly adding and removing timing to avoid knock.  I may have to soften its knock suppression a tad to give a smoother line.  

You cant win all the battles on 93octane :)

Doing some testing with the new FP30, I was able to get some initial runs.  Here are the SAE charts for this turbo.

This dyno pull shows one of many, although not 390awhp, this was corrected for SAE factors (air temperature and the like).  The true uncorrected power was 390awhp, and 345torque.  She needs more boost and more tuning.  This shows the general power curve of this turbo, but is only a preliminary judgment factor.  There still needs to be many other things sorted out, as with the Green turbo back in the day.

Here is an AEM plot showing boost, knock, and a/f ratio.  Everything was quite consistent and dandy.

This turbo definitely exhibits more power after 7000rpm.  More testing shall come forth soon.
