Story of the "Devil" ***RESOLVED
as of 4/9/99!!**
(1999 Mitsubishi Eclipse GSX in RED)
| Here is my experience with the worst car Ive ever gotten my hands on. It started from day one driving home from Flemington Mitsubishi in New Jersey: |
|
| 10/12/98 |
| I look at car.. And what I see is what I like :). Nice new 1999 Red Eclipse GSX for sale, with about 160 miles on it (so it was drivin from Pennsylvania). I drive the car home. Everything seems cool, even took my dad along. I never get the car about 3000 rpm or above 60 mph. Simply because It has to be broken in until 1000 miles. This car is georgous! Tan leather, turbo, 17" rims, big spoiler on back, all the accessories you can imagine, even mud flaps! So far so good. |
|

| 10/13/98 |
| Well, time to goto school. Hmmm. As i look around, i notice the passenger seat is loose. Odd. The bolts holding it in are literally off! No big deal. I just tighten them and im off. I drive the car around for about 600 miles. Everything in shape. Or so i though... |
| At about 600 miles, I end up installing some nice sounding air horns. Great sound! I also hook up the fog light fuse to a different relay so I can turn them on while my lights are off. (Just to be different :)). Long behold, as I look around the engine compartment I notice a missing groumet that keeps the radiator from moving. Odd. No big deal. So until I hit 1000 miles, I start pushing the car a bit.. But not to much. Just enough. At 800 miles, I was stuck in traffic and decided to GUN the car just a slight bit to get ahead. Long behold, the CHECK ENGINE LIGHT comes on. Great. Im becoming very skeptical now. |
| I call Paul Hozer from BELL Mitsubishi here on Route 1/9 in Jersey (BELL from now on). I schedule an appointment to see what cause the light to come on. |
|
|
| 10/28/98 |
| Ok. 8:00 am. I drop off the car with 1430 miles on it at BELL. I actually wait for 2 hours. I tell PAUL (BELL): "Paul, I got a check engine light on a BRAND NEW car. Please find it. By the way, Im also missing a radiator groument, the left passenger seat was loose, the REAR SPEAKERS vibrate alot even with little bass (not the vibration you get from underpowered or blown speakers), the lights dim imensly if I put a turn signal on, almost as if the battery was low or something, and I get this "squeking" noise under the hood." He says "No prob. Well see what we can do." |
| 2 hours later, the car is done. Here is what they found. |
| - The check engine light was from a TPS sensor code that went out of range. So they "reset it." Light is now off. |
| They ordered a groument for my radiator. |
| The speakers were operating properly. |
| Lights/battery were operating to specs. |
| Squeaking noise found from a loose window regulator??? |
| OK. So far so good. Time to go back to school. As im driving, I notice the SQUEAKING noise is still there. DAMN. They didnt find it. The speakers still vibrate. The lights still dim heavily. Oh well., Ill live with it. |
| 10/29/98 |
| Next day. As im driving (pulling away from stop slowly), the check engine light comes back on. Something is definately wrong here. But wait, theres more. As im driving, I accidentally keep the gear in 5th, at about 30mph. But I wasnt even stepping on the gas, I was in a way coasting, but adding a touch of gas here and there when I started to notice this crazy RATTLE from the drivline. Not a good sign. Im told Im not supposed to drive a car at that low of a speed and gassing it, but here is the thing. Im a mechanic, i KNOW what im doing. ANY car can take a dab of gas at 30mph in 5th gear and NOT RATTLE like CRAZY.. So something is definately wrong. Well, as im driving in slow traffic on the Parkway, I also notice every time I take the foot off the gas or dab the gas a bit, on ANY gear or SPEED, a CLANK is heard. This clank reminds me of what I learned in Auto Tech School where if you step on the gas, the engine supplies power to the trans, so if there is any free play between those parts, youll here a CLANK sound, BUT, if you take your foot off the gas, the wheels/transmission supply power BACK to the engine, and again if there is free play, the CLANK will be heard as well. This is not looking to good. Oh, one other thing, as Im driving in ANY gear, I get this odd vibration at 3000 rpm. |
| 10/30/98 |
| Wow. This car is REALLY squeaking the hell out of me. I opened the hood again and after a bit of inspection, I noticed the Hood Hanger was rubbing on a radiator clamp. So, I gave the clamp a turn and viola!. No more squeak. But wait. Whats this? A loose (dangling) vacuum hose!! Great., now Im starting to think that they forgot to tighten my car since every thing is loose! But wait, there is more! The Overfill tank for the radiator is also just laying in the compartment. Hmm.. I ended up pluging the hose back in and pushing the tank into its slot. Took care of that. |
| *I changed the oil around 1000 Miles just to be safe.. To some 5w30 type...* |
|
|
| 11/04/98 |
| Back to the dealer. (1842 miles on the car now) Now Im dealing with Terry, who seems like a really cool service guy. He takes care of me real well from this point on. (Thanks). This time I complain of all these problems: |
| - Check engine still on |
| - Rear washer sprayer doesnt seem to work |
| - Backlash in the Transmission (Clanking sound)-> But the dealer took this as being the RATTLING noise I would get in 5th gear/30mph. |
| So. I wait about an hour this time. Here is what the dealer does/says: |
| - TPS was out of range again. So they fixed it AGAIN. Check engine light is off again. Ok. |
| - Rear washer is fine. They say it "tinkles" back there. Funny, looks like I have to hold the washer lever at least a minute before I see a sign of water back there. Something must be crimped... |
| - They replaced the groumet for the radiator. |
| - They say my transmission is fine. The noise is normal (yeah right!). |
| At this point, I told Terry (BELL), "Hey, can I drive a new GSX you have here. I want to see if my car is actually screwed up or not." He says SURE. Great. First, my car. I drive around, and pop it into 5th gear around 30mph and just dab the gas slightly. The RATTLING sound is hear tremendously. He thinks its normal. BUT, then I start driving the new GSX with Terry, and I do the same thing. Guess what, this NEW GSX drove completely different than my car!! It was much MUCH smoother, no rattling, no clanking, and even the clutch felt completely different. Unbelievable! At this point, Terry realizes there is something wrong with my car. So we schedule another appointment to bring the car in for a checkup on this problem. |
|
|
| 11/5/98 |
| Next day, as Im driving, the check engine light comes on a THIRD time. I think to myself, "No sweat, Ill ask my internet buddies if this is normal." From what all my internet buds (at #dsm on IRC :)) the ECU has to be replaced. I got various emails from many people with the same TPS/check engine light problem saying that the dealer replaced the ECU, and the problem was fixed. So I printed up these emails and decided to bring them in the next day to show Terry. |
| At this point, I call Mistubishi Headquarters (MITSU from here on) and complain. They say theyll try their best to speed this process up. Yup. Thats all they said. They just want me to be on my way and make me happy. Ok. No problem. They also said they would accomodate me with a Rental if needed. Im starting to think my car is in big trouble. |
| So at this point I got an appointment with BELL next week for the RATTLING sound (not the CLANKING sound, which they said was normal ALSO....) |
|
|
| 11/6/98 |
| I wake up, go outside, open the garage, and smell this horrendous GASOLINE odor. Guess what? My car is leaking gasoline. And you can see a BIG puddle underneathe the left rear section of the car. At this piont, I call the dealer up immediately. I decide to take my car in right away to get this repaired. At this point, I end up sticking with a RENTAL. |
| So, since the car is there, I guess they decide to check up on the RATTLING sound as well, and also figure out whats causing the CHECK ENGINE light to come on yet again. |
| 11/9/98 |
| I get a call from Terry (BELL) saying that my ECU needs a ROM PACK to upgrade it. Obviously they arent gonna replace the damn thing, but maybe they came up with a better way of dealing with this problem. Ok. |
| The car ends up staying in the shop for 5 DAYS. They decide the RATTLING sound comes from a UN-BALANCED drive shaft. So they order one. |
| They also tried repairing the check engine light but after driving for a bit, it came back on in THEIR hands. So obviously something was wrong there also. The also informed me that no GAS leak was found. That was strange, but a day later they called me back stating that they FOUND a leak in the head gasket to tank area. They say it was caused by an overtightening of the head which crimped the gasket. So they order a new gasket. |
|
|
| 11/13/98 |
| Well, gasket came. So they replaced the gasket. I ended up taking the car back home. Check engine light still on and the noises in the trans still apparent. |
|
|
| 11/15/98 |
| Today, I noticed gasoline leaking from the rear of the car again. I call up BELL the next day, bring the car there, get a rental AGAIN, and leave it there for about 2 more days. They say that the gasket was crimped again. This time they seemed to have really fixed that because I dont get gasoline leaking anymore. It would usually leak if I had filled the gas tank to full. |
| So the days pass on, I continue driving the car, Check engine light still on, tremendous noises in the transmission, waiting for the ROM PACK for the ECU and the Drive Shaft. |
| *Changed the oil again at 3000 miles, but now went SYNTHETIC :) * |
|
|
| 12/01/98 |
| Just my day. I get a call from Terry, saying parts have arrived. So, I drop the car off at BELL and get a rental, AGAIN. But this time its short. Later that day I return to pick up my car. But before I pick it up, I had drivin with Terry in the NEW GSX again. This time I showed him again that there was NO RATTLING sound in 5th gear/30mph and that there was no CLANKING sound as I taped the gas or let the clutch out. He agreed something was wrong. In the afternoon, Terry called me saying the ECU was flashed, so the check engine light is now a thing of the past. He also mentioned that the New drive shaft fixed both the RATTLING sound and the CLANKING sound. Im happy now. |
| So, I pick up the car. As im driving home, I notice the car is SMOOTH. Maybe they did fix it? Or maybe its just my head telling me so? Because as I shift into 5thgear/30mph, the RATTLING sound appears, but faintly. And guess what. The CLANKING noise is STILL THERE! And its SO annoying. But even worse, my RIGHT SIDE WINDOW doesnt work anymore!! (Please note that the modifications I made to this car could have NO impact in what has happened to it. Simply because they would in no way affect the ECU or TRANSMISSION). |
| So, here is whats going on (at 3400 miles on car): |
| Vibration in speakers still aparant (though sources tell me I just have to remove some material around the speaker to eliminate this) |
| Vibration/Rattling/Clanking noises in trans line still there even with the new shaft |
| Check Engine light gone so far |
| Right window not working |
| Lights dim alot when turning on blinkers, especially at night/cold temperatures. |
|
|
| 12/02/98 |
| Well, I went to the dealer today. Terry hoped right out and said "Whats the problem with the car now.. Better yet, lets go for a spin." (I appreciate the work BELL and Terry have been doing.. So far they havent been on my hate list.. Hehe..) Well, turns out the window wasnt stuck. The window LOCK button was depressed. I guess in all the confusion I wasnt thinking straight. As for the CLANKING noise, I showed him again how it was still there. This time I would keep the car standing and put it in First. I would then slowly let the clutch out and in every second or so, and this was good enough to demonstrate the clanking noise as the clutch engaged (of course the noise was coming from the drive train). His words were "Ill give MITSU a call today, and let you know maybe by tonight what were gonna do. Ill get an enginneer here to take a look at the car and Ill mention the LEMON laws." |
| No problem for me. I already sent my dad to the lawyer with THIS account of all my problems and with all the paper work from the dealers. |
| Later that day Terry calls me and suggests I
bring the car in Friday 4th. They will spend a short time checking the car for
tolerences and play in the differentails. 12/03/98 Here it is: "December 2, 1998 Customer Service Department To Whom It May Concern: I believe that my 1999 Eclipse GSX is a "lemon" under the New Jersey Lemon Law (N.J.S.A. 56:12-29 to 56:12-49). I am hereby making a written demand for relief under the Lemon Law. I purchased a 1999 Eclipse GSX (Vin: xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx) on October
12, 1998 from Flemington Mitsubishi in Flemington, NJ. Since I bought the vehicle, I have
had to return it to the dealership a total of 5 times. My vehicle has been out of My vehicle has been in Bell Mitsubishi on the following days for repair of the following defects: In: October 28, 1998 Out: October 28, 1998 For:Service Engine Light In: November 4, 1998 Out: November 4, 1998 For:Service Engine Light In: November 9, 1998 Out: November 13, 1998 For:Service Engine Light In: November 16, 1998 Out: November 17, 1998 For:Fuel leak In: December 1, 1998 Out: December 1, 1998 For:Check Engine light I am having the following problems with my vehicle at this time:
Since these defects substantially impair the use, value and/or safety of my vehicle, I am hereby allowing you one final opportunity to repair my vehicle. If these repairs are not made within TEN calendar days of receipt of this letter, I am entitled to a replacement vehicle acceptable to me or a refund calculated in accordance with the Lemon Law. I look forward to hearing from you soon......." 12/04/98 12/08/98 12/10/98 12/11/98 I also got a disturbing question from a friend tonight. As he was standing outside my car talking to me with the windows down, he asked "Hey, your engine sounds bad.. you have like a loose vacuum hose or something?" Whats strange is that when I first bought the car, everyone and their mother asked me the same thing!!? How strange... 12/15/98 Since i'm gong on vacation on friday, i better have the car repaired. But i'm seriously going to demand a new car. I dont care. . . its just not fair that I have to own a car thats been dismantled, repaired, and "touched".. its not a virgin anymore.. I feel cheated and i'm going to make sure MITSU gets my point. 12/19/98 WHAT??!?!?! I feel like slapping these 'engineers' silly. Why is it that EVERY SINGLE other GSX (new and old) i've driven had driven differently, smoothly, with no vibrations or clunking noises?? I've had various mechanics tell me that my car has problems. My friends tell me my car has problems. I'm a technician, i KNOW what i'm talking about. My biggest problem is: now what? These problems are annoying, but what worries me more is that their gonna become bigger and worse as the days go on. I wish there was a way :( :( Next thing you know, the warranty is up. Then, OOPS, the drive shafts are stripped!!! (well, you know what i mean.) By the way, they fixed the squeaking problem. Said "Rear bushings needed lube". I'll show them who needs lubbing :) (BELL does a nice job though.. its HEADQUATERS that i'm mad at). 1/7/99 1/13/99 So, I go up front and beg a salesman to let me drive one of their new GSX's. Took them 20 minutes to get the car started. Was flooded or something. Regardless, I 'tore' it up. As best as i could. No CLUNKING noises heard, even if I let the clutch out quickly. Sales guy drives it a bit also. Then, he (and I) take a crack at my car. Again, a MAJOR difference. He tells me there is something wrong with my car. without a doubt. I go back to the service department and beg the rep to drive my car. He gives in finally. As *HE* drives it, he doesnt see anything bad. He takes it around a few times, driving moderately to fast. I take control and tell him "you have to drive it SLOWLY and calmly like your in traffic". So as i'm driving i show him all the sounds (and i also started noticing a squeeking noise under there now.. DAMN!!) He starts writing things down. And he too then says that something isnt right. So he suggest i goto BELL mitsu and get something straightened out. As i'm driving home, i find a NEW way to demonstrate the problem. If i drive at 40mph in 4th gear, and tap the gas 3 to 4 times a second, i get this: Clunk-a... Clunk-a... Clunk-a..squeek... Clunk-a .. Clunk.. etc... NOW i have a definate legite way to show these guys there is something wrong. And guess what, that SQUEEK noise is new, and the CLUNK is SO loud now!! (maybe the new drive shaft they put in made it worse??) I get home, and call BELL and speak to Terry (Service Rep). I tell him "Hi. member me? i'm 2 seconds away from calling my lawyer if my car doesnt get fixed." I suggested we try installing those shims. in the rear diff case (to bring the tolerence from .008 to .005). If it works.. its all good. He said he would speak to Vick at Atlantic City tonight and to call him (terry) monday. 1/17/99 I called TERRY today at 9 am. He says he didnt have a chance to speak with the engineer. I told him "Terry, i'm calling my lawyer!" Now things are gonna get nasty. 1/27/99 Oh, another thing. I started to notice how when i'm stopped at a RED light, car idleing, I hit the brakes, and the RPM goes down.. almost until stalling!! that is so wierd.. Seems as if this car is trying TO hard to keep those rear lights working.. hmmm And also, those CLUNKING noises have gotten worse. ITS NOT MY DRIVING.. because a brand new car is not supposed to give way this quick.. plus look at all the previous problems.. its a tall tale sign. So I sent the Lemon Rep in New Jersey a packet also, trying to see if there is anything else they can do so I don't have to get a lawyer... Oh, and the car is at 6000 miles.. another 30 bucks on an oil change. DAMN... Wish me luck :) 2/14/99 This car is becoming my worst nightmare. I'm still waiting on Consumer Affairs for a reply on getting a court reputle or something. The lemon law is going to the next step. I'll keep you informed. And my car is getting WORSE. 3/8/99 Funny. I think that Subaru 2.5RS looks really tempting now (it was my original love/car). :) 3/11/99 Guess what... Mediation manager Mr. Palakin gave me a call today. He said a few things.. But one important phrase: "What would you like to do. Your money back, or a new car..." Looks like my efforts seem to be working. Well, I opted for my money back. Getting my money back, minus 300/400 bucks for mileage offset (which I never heard about in the Lemon Law article) gives me the option to look around for something else. Sadly, I might by the same car. I fell in love with the interior, what can I say. The power, the look, its everything. Maybe a subaru 2.5RS wont make it? Its just not the same without the turbo, leather, cockpit interior... I wish the Supra was around, but its not AWD either. And all 2000 models dont attract me. Its tough. Regardless, Mr. Palikan said that Vick C.O.C (district manager for east coast) would receive the check around end of March, and would contact me beginning of April. I was told its going to be hard to find one just like mine again. I dont know at the moment. I hope this goes through well. I'll keep everyone informed. Again, wish me luck. By the way, my eclipse is at 7150 miles today. It rattles and clunks and squeaks ALL OVER THE PLACE. Its getting worse. Oh well. 3/30/99 Car hits 8340miles (And so does my Motorcycle). 8340 miles since October 15... is that alot of mileage?? 4/9/99 Thanks to everyone for the responses/pity/help. Especially the crew at IRC #dsm!! They pretty much guided me with all my options. OH! while driving the old car to the dealer to trade in for my check, I got a check engine light come on.. Also, about 2 weeks ago, I unplugged the TPS sensor (a friend of mine had told me that MITSU probably disabled the check engine light..) and started/drove the car. The check engine light NEVER CAME ON!! How strange. The car went into the dealer with 9120 miles (needed an oil change already) To read the NEXT episode which will include logs of the NEW gsx i'm going to buy, click HERE P.S. I ETCHED the word Lemon on the front left shock mount from inside the hood. Its inscribed there. I hope who ever ends up with that car will sooner or later find it:) |
