FIRST TRACK VISIT


First run at my local track with my car FULLY STOCK (with only my 3 gauges installed), pump gas

Now..  here, my car was all stock.  No modifications.   As per my gauge readings, i wasnt noticing ..  to excited with watching the road.  On my 1st run, i launched the car 4500rpms, dumped the clutch, and shifted every gear around 6000rpm or so.  On my 2nd run, i launched the car 5500rpms, dumped the clutch, and shifted 5800 on every gear.  For some reason i had equal runs until 1000 feet.   I think this has severely to do with my restrictions on this car.  It doesnt seem to do well above 80mph...

Here, i launched at 4000 (tried a slip and dump), but bogged badly.  1st shifted at 7000rpm, 2nd at 6800, 3rd at 6500 RIGHT at the end of the trap.

Well, i dont know what happened here.  oh, same thing as before, but i didnt bog on my LAUNCH.  This is pretty much what i was running stock...  shifting around 6800 everygear.  Also hit 4th a bit before the end of the trap.

Well well, i did a perfect launch (bogged just a bit.. )..  did a 4500 slip and dump launch.  Shifted 1st at 7000rpm, 2nd at 6900rpm and rode 3rd till 6800rpm to hit 92mph!!  in 15seconds!   Well, it doesnt seem to be my MODS that are giving me a faster car.  I think its HOW YOU DRIVE IT. 

I'm gonna check with raising my tire PSI and removing the spare for a quicker/lighter time....  And possibly shift 1st and 2nd at 6500 and 3rd earlier...maybe 6000 or so...  I DONT speedshift.

All my mods are on.  Did a 'save the clutch' launch... that explains low 60.   Car has been feeling slugish... getting 9deg retard.  Shifted a bit lower in RPM range, especially in first gear...  and shifted into forth...  maybe should have kept it in 3rd???

Here, i didnt even launch.  Shifted nice and slow.  But I rode till 7000rpm in 3rd gear, that explains the 92.76mph.  But a 15.8!!?!?  who cares.  At least I'm making some HP since i got a good Trap Speed.  Must be the hot weather.

Well, i slipped the clutch like CRAZY by mistake...  smelt it in the end :)    Rode till 7000rpm in 3rd gear, and shifted at high rpms on each gear.   If these numbers are correct, and if it was 20 degrees LOWER, i might have broken the 15s 1/4 mark...  i'm very sure of it.  Next will come a 16G.

NOTICE how on my 2ND run, i hit a 2.5 60foot, 15.8 et @ 92.76mph   and a WHILE back, i had run
                                                          2.3 60foot, 15.38et@ 92.44mph   .   See the difference?  Same trap speed, but a SLOWER et.  That means only one thing, that my MODS are giving me MORE HP!!   I'm sure if the weather was 60 degrees again, and my clutch was in good shape, and i did a 1.9s launch again, i would hit 14s VERY easily.  My goal is to hit 100MPH, regardless of ET, because et's arent everything! (et=1/4 time)

I screwed up this one.  Was reseting my datalogger when light turned green.   Got distracted and bogged a stupid 4k launch, wasnt even prepared.  Rest of the run i 'took' my time shifting.  1st, 2nd till 7000rpm, 3rd till 6000, 4th for a bit..  Now.  bogging big time, i was able to attain a 2.258 60'.  Also,   1/8MPH is almost 72mph!  that means 2nd gear IS pulling much much harder than when stock.  As for the rest of the run.  Its a shame.  I should be pulling 13s, but i'm scared.  To launch and ruin my clutch, and to shift QUICK and ruin my tranny.  Maybe i wont race 1/4 anymore.  The car tonight felt like it had LOTS of power.  Seat of the pants feel was unbelievable!!

Here, i took 3rd till 7000rpm, and hit 4th at the end.  Look at this data.   2.911 60!!  I did a very normal take off.  The boost lag is so bad (3500) that it takes that long to do the 60 (plus 1st to 2nd shift was slow.. ).  But look at my 1/8 mph.  74.67!!!  The Fastest 1/8 yet!  5mph FASTER than stock, without even trying!  And, although it was a 15.6 et, got a 94.93mph!  Another record for me.  The fastest mph i've hit.  Almost 95 :)  Means i'm making serious power.  I"M SURE if i launched the car (with a new clutch) AND shifted very quickly, this car can hit 13s..  it just feels it.   But i probably will never reach that day.  Dont want to ruin tranny, and cant afford a new clutch.   Maybe when this car gets 'old'.

** D'OH!  Guess what.  I just noticed my bills.  The reciept for the gas i filled up BEFORE the track was for 87 Octane gasoline.  NO wonder my car's timing was very low.. i had a feeling something wasnt right.  Well, i guess this track visit can just go to the trash...

Wow.  I launched this run but  bogged it.  Regardless, got a 14.32at96.73!  My first fast run of the decade! woohoo!   Well, i also shifted very quick.  Here are my settings...

1st:   Shifted  @ 6898rpms, with a min O2v of .94
2nd:  Shifted  @ 6586rpms, with a min O2v of .92-.94
3rd:  Shifted  @  6621rpms,  "                 "         .90-.92
4rd:  O2s of .88v
EGTS hit a MAX of 1550... (H2o injection was really helping keep them low..)
AFC settings were 8, -8, -18, -6, -4

Hmm.  Did about the same thing.  Notice LESS humidity??  Anyway, got some vital datalogger on this run.  I also tried streaching the gears more...Also, my fastest et MPH, 97.83mph!

1st Shifted  @ 6668rpms,  Timing went from 8 to 19 deg. Landed me at 4230rpm
2nd Shifted @ 7035rpms, Timing went from  12 to 21 deg.  Landed me at 4625rpm
3rd Shifted @  6816rpms, Timing went from 12 to 20 deg.  Landed me at 4945rpm
4th    Timing started at 13 deg.
EGTS hit a max of 1500 again...
AFC settings were 6, -6, -18, -6, -4 (Basically the same)

The bog was less for the launch, but check this out.  A 14.098et!!!  My fastest yet!  What did i do?  leaned out the afc to 6, -6, -20, -8, -6 AND shifted to about 7000rpm on all 3 gears.  Since my quicker shifting gave me a better time, my MPH didnt improve.  Basically, this means one thing.   My TOP END is 'dead'.  Maybe i need some more fuel?  Maybe my intake (fmic) is still to restrictive?  Plus i'm running 20psi this time.  SO.

Perfect LAUNCH!  Didnt get a chance to datalog this run.  a 1.899 60foot! my first.  Even my 1/8 was the fastest to date.  BUT, my 1/8mph was pretty low.   Obviously, the quick 60 got me to the 330 so fast that my mph wasnt up to par.    1000foot was a tad quicker as well.  Well hey, a 13.974 1/4!!!  It must be the cold weather.  But, dissapointing MPH.  I'm STILL having low top end power.  My only other culprit must be the FMIC.  Everything else checked out right.

- - - - - - - I was hungry.. and getting tired.  Just forget about the rest of these runs. 

I shifted all of them into 4th.  and redlined every gear.  O2s were at .89 all around.  Egts touched 1550.  BUT, my ECU still pulled timing.  I wonder whats going on.  As you can see on the TIMING graphs, even after richening up my AFC, i STILL got ecu retardation around 5500 to 5900rpm and above.  My 5600 and 7200knobs WERE at 0.  Maybe i have to put them at +6 or so?  I mean, my o2s were still at .89 and my egts never touched 1600degF.  Something is up...  although the car feels MUCH faster!

***I'll be damned.  When i got home, i opened up the hood.  Heard a HISSSSSing sound.  Turns out i had a huge hole in a small vacuum hose, the BOV line.?   So technically, i had a boost leak.  I wonder if a leak this small could have caused my power loss? ****

Still needs some more tuning of the 20g.  Maybe some porting, and i was running a soft rubber lower FMIC hose that didnt like 20+ psi.  Other than that, car felt strong.  More work to do:)

*** Well well, doing some testing, i found out i had 3 leaks.  1) turbo boost nipple was NOT capped, major leak.  2) lower FMIC pipe was leaking air at the weld 3) BOV was leaking boost starting at 5psi.   Cleared them all up, car now feels stronger.

All runs were shifted to 7krpm on 1st, 2nd and 3rd gears.  I still shift a tad slow.   There are still some more kinks to be worked out on this car.   O2s were allways 1.00v for some odd reason, but the last run ended with 20psi, safc at -23% and egts at 1560-1590.  Still more room to play with if I wanted.

Also I have some datalogs of 3 runs, primarily the 1st, 2nd and 4th run.   Timing never dipped and would start from 10deg and rise to 20deg all the time = good tuning so far / little detonation.  There are still some minor boost leaks on the fmic pipe welds, and I'm running a 2.5" muffler on a 3" exhaust system which I will fix very soon.  I should be in the mid / high 12s shortly on PUMP gas, daily driven :)  Wish me luck!

Mods wise I'm done, and driving wise I'm getting better (note times are consistent), but now its left to TUNING, which I need to get straightened out.  Next will be some RACE gas runs.  Hope to see easy 12s.  But at this rate, looks dismal.  I seem to be stuck in 13.4-13.5 range.  MPH seems to be steady now at 104-106.  Probably had bad gas = lower mph.  Who knows.

I seem to know how to ge the car in mid-low 13s.  20psi, -25safc and its a garunteed mid 13.  Any leaner and I might be risking engine damage, as my egts are at 1600 right now.

Well, found 1 problem.  My boost wasnt consistent.  Instead of hittin 24psi, it would hit 24 in 1st and in 2nd, then 3rd would hit 17~18, and climb to 24 by 7krpm, and 4th would hit 17psi flat.  So I wasnt running my best, yet again.   This time I tried race gas, r/f headlight out and got an altime best 60 of 1.82 and mph of 107.12!  Its getting there but too slowly.

Well, found 1 problem.  My boost wasnt consistent AGAIN.  Instead of hittin 24psi, it would hit 24 in 1st and in 2nd, 3rd would hit 24, then 20 and back to 24, and at times i would hit 30psi.  Time for an external wg and some more porting to my turbine exhaust housing.  This time I tried race gas  and got an altime best 60 of 1.823 and mph of 107.45!  Its getting there but too slowly.  Headlight was not removed.  And ITC ended up back to 0's for fear of boost problems.  At one time, my engine lost all power, made a 'brrrrrr' noise and regained power.  Seems like massive timing retard.

Interesting observations.  With pump gas, 18 psi and quick shifting, I was able to match my 13.2 runs I had with pump gas.  The car seemed to die out in 3rd and 4th gear due to the hot weater.  Tuning was of essence, but I was not prepared to race today.

This was the big race at the shootout, a few hundred Eclipses made it there.  I stuck at the 12.9s @ 107 range, no matter how much boost and how leaner I went.  It was hot, and I wasnt expecting the best since my last run back in Jersey.

Well..  I felt very tired.  It was one of those days, and I shouldnt have run.  Anyways, I bogged a lunch.  This is my first run after the rebuild so I was extra carefull.  I tried shifting quick but it wasnt as quick as I usually shift.  Car was runnin 1.00+ o2s all the way down the track mostly because it cooled down a bunch.  Whereas my o2s were .94-.98 on the highway, I should have gone extra lean just for racing.  Next time I know.

Here are pms logs of these 3 runs - ( RUN A ) - ( RUN B ) - ( RUN C ) in text delimited, and in the .dab file format, ( RUN A ) - ( RUN B ) - ( RUN C )

Here is a quick shot of run 3.  Notice how the timing goes bezerk in 2nd, 3rd and 4th gear.  I would feel the car lossing and gaining power as I was accelerating.  Something must not have been right.  I suspect detonation, due to improperly tuned PMS.  I got 910degC egts on this run, using only the WOT table (boost table all 0's) and settings -14,-24,-10,-10 for fuel, and 4,7,7,6 for timing.

These were very strange runs.  It was my first launch on the new clutch.  But, the car seems to not be going any faster than 106mph no matter what modifications I put.  Even the new PMS software doesnt seem to help.  I think i'm at the limit of my internal engine parts as far as 20psi and pump gas are concerned.   I shall try a few runs on race gas possibly next week if time permits, in the meantime, i have more tuning to do on the PMS.

1) Even after some quick shifting and good launches, my 1-2 shift is still lagging behind
2) I seem to notice more and more between shifts how my 20g boost lag is hurting.  I end up spending more time waiting for the spool up time then actually shifting
3) For some reason, the car feels flat at first initial WOT.  Then picks up power.  It hink this is just fine tune adjustment.  Again, i'm running 20psi and 93 octane.

I ended up ruining my clutch after the 1st run.  The last 2 runs were trials to see if my clutch was still intact, but it was toast.  I also ruined my 3rd gear the day after.  This clutch lasted me 27 passes.  Time for an ACT.  Otherwise, the 1st run is now my fastest on pumpgas.  EGTs topped at 890, fuel pw was pretty high, but knock was very low.  These were my ProEFI settings HERE.   Timing started at 13deg @ 4krpm, ended at 17deg @ 7krpm, and fuel was around the 16ms range all throughout.

Well, I was having hard time launching, and shifting my newly rebuilt tranny.   But the last run came very close to my previous fastest.  This means the power is there, but I'm really at my limit.  I had lowered timing and played with fuel, a nd went back to -4deg exhcam gear.  I have to find other ways to make power.  Loose weight or change turbo...

Same issue, boost was uncontrollable.  You can see in the datalog 3rd gear boost hit 3bar, (and beyond).  I drove this run feathering the throttle, hitting massive fuel cut, and etc.  Not a good run.  more excuses :)

This log shows Boost (RED), RPM (GREEN), Knock retard (BLUE), Wideband air/fuel (PURPLE).  You can see in 3rd gear, the boost controller totally went nuts, and I ended up running 30+psi (how much I dont know).  You can see at 6800rpm in every gear, the knock retard getting active.  This is the Ecu pulling timing to control knock.  And you can see in the air/Fuel the richness that occruss as well fom the knock suppression.

  Finally broke into the 11s, after 1 year of battling.  This was in part to a few things:
---1) Lower boost, 20 instead of 22 (the boost i dynoed with, 20psi gives 405whp on my car)
---2) lower boost helped get rid of the crazy boost SPIKE
---3) Shifting SLOWER helped totally get rid of this boost spike.  You can still see in the log 4th gear had 2-3 psi spike, but it was much more controllable.  

In this graph, you can see the small peak in 4th gear, a small boost spike.  You can also see big timing retard around 6800rpm in 2nd and 3rd gear.  This is hurting my power, and I have more work to do.

About the only thing I dont have proof of here is the exhaust emission smell and color.  These runs were all done on 93 octane, which proves that good gas is not allways needed for good power, tuning is key.  I Just have to fix this boost problem before I attempt 11.5 @ 120 :)  Wish me luck.

I thought I was going to run 11s, but no go.  Car was fine except for the 30psi boost spike.  Otherwise, my driving skills need improvement.  Must fix the 2nd gear bog problem.

Here is the log file.  Notice no more 30psi spikes between gears.  Everything looked ok, knock retard was normal activity, a/f ratio was 12.4~11.8ish (it was very cold so my maps were a bit off).  Next time I will log TPS sensor so I can time my datalogs as far as boost threshold).

Only problem left now is, driving it solid down the track.  If I could get a 1.70 60foot (which anyone should get on a dsm) this run would have rivaled that 11.7, especially with the mph.  Some speculate easy 11.5 at 123ish mph, all on 93 octane and 4 cylinders.  How bizzare is that :)
