About Woodpeckers

Pileated Woodpeckers

These photographs were taken in Camden, Maine, but the Pileated lives everywhere east of the Mississippi River and from coast to coast in Canada. The Pileated is "common locally" which means that it's not neccessarily common in a wide-spread area, however, it is a common feature in the area in which it resides.

Pileateds tend to be hard to locate because they prefer deep woods. On the other hand, they are adjusting to human encroachment. While many are a bit shy, they will often tolerate close approach by humans. They are the largest commonly-seen woodpecker in the United States and have a loud eerie call which is as identifially unmistakable as the large rectangular holes they carve into trees.
